The Kanakadhara Stotram is recited to please Goddess Lakshmi. The qualities of Maa Lakshmi have been described in this Stotram in 18 verses.

Adi Shankaracharya was the creator of the Kanakadhara Stotram (Kanakdhara Strot). Kanakdhara means “Stream of Gold”. It is said that by pleasing Goddess Lakshmi through this Stotra, he made it rain gold. There is a very famous story on how this Stotra was composed, which we have shared below in this post.

॥ Sri Kanakadhara Stotram ॥

अङ्ग हरेः पुलकभूषणमाश्रयन्ती
भृङ्गाङ्गनेव मुकुलाभरणं तमालम् ।
अङ्गीकृताखिलविभूतिरपाङ्गलीला
माङ्गल्यदास्तु मम मङ्गलदेवतायाः ॥1॥

Angam hare pulaka bhooshanamasrayanthi
Bhringanga neva mukulabharanam thamalam
Angikrithakhila vibhuthirapanga leela
Mangalyadasthu mama mangala devathaya || 1 ||

Meaning ॥1॥ – The Hari (Lord Vishnu) who wears supreme happiness as Ornament, the Goddess Lakshmi is attracted, just like a bhramari (bees) that attracts and takes shelter in the Tamal tree decorated with semi-developed flowers (buds) and decorate them with their humming sound. Let her who is the presiding deity of all auspiciousness, Maa Lakshmiji, may that glance bring auspiciousness and prosperity into my life.

मुग्धा मुहुर्विदधती वदने मुरारेः
प्रेमत्रपाप्रणिहितानि गतागतानि ।
माला दृशोर्मधुकरीव महोत्पले या
सा मे श्रियं दिशतु सागरसम्भवायाः ॥2॥

Mugdha muhurvidhadhadathi vadhane Murare
Premathrapapranihithani gathagathani
Mala dhrishotmadhukareeva maheth pale ya
Sa ne sriyam dhisathu sagarasambhavaya ॥2॥

Meaning ॥2॥ – Just as bhramari (bees) keeps on coming and going (hovering) on ​​the lotus, in the same way, whose glances are repeatedly going with hesitation and love on the face of Sri Hari and returns bashfully. May that beautiful enchanted eyesight of Goddess Lakshmi bestow me with wealth.

आमीलिताक्षमधिगम्य मुदा मुकुन्द –
मानन्दकन्दमनिमेषमनङ्गतन्त्रम् ।
आकेकरस्थितकनीनिकपक्ष्मनेत्रं
भूत्यै भवेन्मम भुजङ्गशयाङ्गनायाः ॥3॥

Ameelithaksha madhigamya mudha Mukundam
Anandakandamanimeshamananga thanthram
Akekara stiththa kaninika pashma nethram
Bhoothyai bhavenmama bhjangasayananganaya॥3॥

Meaning ॥3॥ – Who has captured the joyous face of Mukunda (Lord Vishnu) through her fully opened eyes, her gaze remaining on his ecstatic face with closed eyes. Her glance is filled with happiness and love. Let a glance from the corner of her eyes that lavishes Mukunda come to rest on me and shower me with wealth.

बाह्वन्तरे मधुजितः श्रितकौस्तुभे या
हारावलीव हरिनीलमयी विभाति ।
कामप्रदा भगवतोऽपि कटाक्षमाला
कल्याणमावहतु मे कमलालयायाः ॥4॥

Bahwanthare madhujitha srithakausthube ya
Haravaleeva nari neela mayi vibhathi
Kamapradha bhagavatho api kadaksha mala
Kalyanamavahathu me kamalalayaya॥4॥

Meaning ॥4॥ – The one who is adorned like a beautiful necklace in the chest of Lord Madhusudan which is adorned by Kaustubha Mani (a most valuable gem in the world) and the one who infuses love in their mind too, may that eyesight of Goddess Kamala who lives in the lotus garden bless me forever and bring auspiciousness and wealth to me.

कालाम्बुदालिललितोरसि कैटभारे –
र्धाराधरे स्फुरति या तडिदङ्गनेव ।
मातुः समस्तजगतां महनीयमूर्ति –
र्भद्राणि मे दिशतु भार्गवनन्दनायाः ॥5॥

Kalambudhaalithorasi kaida bhare
Dharaadhare sphurathi yaa thadinganeva
Mathu samastha jagatham mahaneeya murthy
Badrani me dhisathu bhargava nandanaya॥5॥

Meaning ॥5॥ – The way lightning flashes in the clouds, in the same way, that shines on the graceful chest of Lord Vishnu, who killed Kaithaba. The gracious Mother of the whole universe, the daughter of the mighty sage Bhargava. May her auspicious form touch my life and bring me prosperity and grant me welfare.

प्राप्तं पदं प्रथमतः किल यत्प्रभावान्
माङ्गल्यभाजि मधुमाथिनि मन्मथेन।
मय्यापतेत्तदिह मन्थरमीक्षणार्धं
मन्दालसं च मकरालयकन्यकायाः॥6॥

Praptham padam pradhamatha khalu yat prabhavath
Mangalyabhaji madhu madhini manamathena
Mayyapadetha mathara meekshanardham
Manthalasam cha makaralaya kanyakaya॥6॥

Meaning ॥6॥ Kamdeva (Manmatha) had gained a place in Lord Madhusudan’s heart by the influence of that slow, silent, half-opened eyes full of love and blessings, a glance so soft, of Samudrakanya (daughter of the ocean) Lakshmi, the same vision fall upon me as well.

विश्वामरेन्द्रपदविभ्रमदानदक्ष –
मानन्दहेतुरधिकं मुरविद्विषोऽपि ।
ईषन्निषीदतु मयि क्षणमीक्षणार्ध –
मिन्दीवरोदरसहोदरमिन्दिरायाः ॥7॥

Viswamarendra padhavee bramadhana dhaksham
Ananda hethu radhikam madhu vishwoapi
Eshanna sheedhathu mayi kshanameekshanartham
Indhivarodhara sahodharamidhiraya॥7॥

Meaning ॥7॥ – Who is capable of giving luxuries of the position of Indra, the lord of all the deities. The one who is very dear to Sri Hari and who looks as beautiful as the inner part of Neelkamal (Blue water lily). Such Goddess Lakshmi with half-open eyes must look at me too for a moment.

इष्टा विशिष्टमतयोऽपि यया दयार्द्र –
दृष्ट्या त्रिविष्टपपदं सुलभं लभन्ते।
दृष्टिः प्रहृष्टकमलोदरदीप्तिरिष्टां
पुष्टिं कृषीष्ट मम पुष्करविष्टरायाः ॥8॥

Ishta visishtamathayopi yaya dhayardhra
Dhrishtya thravishta papadam sulabham labhanthe
Hrishtim prahrushta kamlodhara deepthirishtam
Pushtim krishishta mama pushkravishtaraya || 8 ||

Meaning ॥8॥ Persons with special intellect, who deserve her grace, easily attain the heavenly position by the influence of her merciful divine glance. Her glance bears the splendor of a lotus in bloom, that magical, joyous moment; May that gleaming eyesight / glance of the same Padmaasanaa (one who sits on the lotus), grant me the desired boon and nourish my wishes.

दद्याद् दयानुपवनो द्रविणाम्बुधारा –
मस्मिन्नकिञ्चनविहङ्गशिशौ विषण्णे।
दुष्कर्मघर्ममपनीय चिराय दूरं
नारायणप्रणयिनीनयनाम्बुवाहः ॥9॥

Dhadyaddhayanu pavanopi dravinambhudaraam
Asminna kinchina vihanga sisou vishanne
Dhushkaramagarmmapaneeya chiraya dhooram
Narayana pranayinee nayanambhuvaha॥9॥

Meaning ॥9॥ – May the cloud in the form of eyes of Lord Sri Hari’s beloved, inspired by the wind of mercy, drive away the evil of misdeeds for a long time and let shower a stream of wealth on me lying in despair.

गीर्देवतेति गरुडध्वजसुन्दरीति
शाकम्भरीति शशिशेखरवल्लभेति।
सृष्टिस्थितिप्रलयकेलिषु संस्थितायै

Gheerdhevathethi garuda dwaja sundarithi
Sakambhareethi sasi shekara vallebhethi
Srishti sthithi pralaya kelishu samsthitha ya
Thasyai namas thribhvanai ka guros tharunyai ॥10॥

Meaning ॥10॥ – The Mother Bhagwati who resides in the form of Vagdevata (Brahma shakti) at the time of Srishtikrida (Creator of the world), in the form of Lakshmi as the consort of Vishnu at the time of Palankrida (Saviour of the world), Shakambhari as the wife of Lord Shankar at the time of Pralayakrida (Destroyer of the world), those My complete salutations to Lord Lakshmi, the ever-youthful lover of Vishnu and the only Guru of the whole world.

श्रुत्यै नमोऽस्तु शुभकर्मफलप्रसूत्यै
रत्यै नमोऽस्तु रमणीयगुणार्णवायै।
शक्त्यै नमोऽस्तु शतपत्रनिकेतनायै
पुष्ट्यै नमोऽस्तु पुरुषोत्तमवल्लभायै ॥11॥

Sruthyai namosthu shubha karma phala prasoothyai
Rathyai namosthu ramaneeya gunarnavayai
Shakthyai namosthu satha pathra nikethanayai
Pushtayi namosthu purushotthama vallabhayai॥11॥

Meaning ॥11॥ O Mother Lakshmi, I bow down to you in the form Shruti, who gives the fruits of good deeds. Salutations to you in the form of Rati, an ocean of delightful qualities. Salutations to Goddess Rama (Lakshmi) who resides in Kamalkunj (lotus forest), and my salutations to the beloved of Purushottam, Pushti.

नमोऽस्तु नालीकनिभाननायै
नमोऽस्तु दुग्धोदधिजन्मभूत्यै।
नमोऽस्तु सोमामृतसोदरायै
नमोऽस्तु नारायणवल्लभायै ॥12॥

Namosthu naleekha nibhananai
Namosthu dhugdhogdhadhi janma bhoomayai
Namosthu somamrutha sodharayai
Namosthu narayana vallabhayai॥12॥

Meaning ॥12॥ Salutations to Mother Lakshmi with a face like lotus in full bloom. Salutations to you, the one born of the ocean of milk, along with the moon and the divine nectar. Salutations to you, the most beloved of Narayana.

सम्पत्कराणि सकलेन्द्रियनन्दनानि
साम्राज्यदानविभवानि सरोरुहाक्षि।
त्वद्वन्दनानि दुरिताहरणोद्यतानि
मामेव मातरनिशं कलयन्तु मान्ये ॥13॥

Sampath karaani sakalendriya nandanani
Samrajya dhana vibhavani saroruhakshi
Twad vandanani dhuritha haranodhythani
Mamev matharanisam kalayanthu manye॥13॥

Meaning ॥13॥ O Kamalakshi (lotus-eyed), prayers offered at your feet are the giver of opulence (wealth) and bliss to all the senses, the giver of all pleasures, the destroyer of all sins. May I always get the auspicious opportunity of worshiping your feet.

यत्कटाक्षसमुपासनाविधिः
सेवकस्य सकलार्थसम्पदः।
संतनोति वचनाङ्गमानसै –
स्त्वां मुरारिहृदयेश्वरीं भजे ॥14॥

Yath Kadaksha samupasana vidhi
Sevakasya sakalartha sapadha
Santhanodhi vachananga manasai
Twaam murari hridayeswareem bhaje॥14॥

Meaning ॥14॥ – The worship of your side glance that is blessed by the entire wealth and prosperity you bestow upon me. May my thoughts, words, and deeds be enveloped by your worship, you who are the beloved Goddess residing in the heart of Murari (Lord Vishnu).

सरसिजनिलये सरोजहस्ते
धवलतमांशुकगन्धमाल्यशोभे।
भगवति हरिवल्लभे मनोज्ञे
त्रिभुवनभूतिकरि प्रसीद मह्यम् ॥15॥

Sarasija-Nilaye Saroja-Haste
Dhavalatama-Amshuka-Gandha-Maalya-Shobhe
Bhagavati Hari-Vallabhe Manojnye
Tri-Bhuvana-Bhuuti-Kari Prasiida Mahyam॥15॥

Meaning ॥15॥ Bhagwati Haripriya! You are the one who resides in Kamalvan, (lotus forest) and holds the lotus in your hands. You are resplendent in dazzling white and adorned with the most fragrant garlands and radiates a divine aura. You are the source of immense happiness and is captivating. Goddess who bestows the glory of Tribhuvan (all three worlds), be pleased with me and grace me with your compassion.

दिग्घस्तिभिः कनककुम्भमुखावसृष्ट –
स्वर्वाहिनीविमलचारुजलप्लुताङ्गीम्।
प्रातर्नमामि जगतां जननीमशेष –
लोकाधिनाथगृहिणीममृताब्धिपुत्रीम् ॥16॥

Dhiggasthibhi kanaka kumbha mukha vasrushta
Sarvahini vimala charu jalaapluthangim
Prathar namami jagathaam janani masesha
Lokadhinatha grahini mamrithabhi puthreem॥16॥

Meaning ॥16॥ – Whose body is anointed by legendary (by the elephants) with the pure water showered from all directions in the golden urn. I pay obeisance in the morning to Goddess Lakshmi, who is the mother of the whole world, wife of Lord Vishnu and the daughter of the ocean that gives nectar.

Meaning ॥17॥ O Kamal-nayani (Whose eyes are like lotus), Lord Vishnu’s beloved Mother Lakshmi ! I am the foremost among the poor people, so I am naturally deserving your grace. Please look at me with your eyes that are filled with kindness and a flood of compassion.

स्तुवन्ति ये स्तुतिभिरमूभिरन्वहं
त्रयीमयीं त्रिभुवनमातरं रमाम्।
गुणाधिका गुरुतरभाग्यभागिनो
भवन्ति ते भुवि बुधभाविताशयाः॥18॥

Sthuvanthi ye sthuthibhirameeranwaham
Thrayeemayim thribhuvanamatharam ramam
Gunadhika guruthara bhagya bhagina
Bhavanthi the bhuvi budha bhavithasayo॥18॥

Meaning ॥18॥ – Those who recite this hymn every day and glorify she who is the Supreme Goddess, the embodiment of the Vedas, the Mother of the three worlds, will receive blessings of virtues in abundance. They shall be blessed to have the wise in their destiny and will become wise by her awakening of their wisdom.

How did the Kanakadhara Stotram originate?

One day Adi Guru Shankaracharya went from house to house for alms. While asking for some food in a house, a very poor Brahmin lady came to the door. Adi Guru Shankaracharya ji asked for some food, the woman searched her house and found only one amla fruit and that woman gave the same amla to Adi Guru Shankaracharya ji.

Shankaracharya was so impressed by the kindness and selflessness of that woman that he recited a hymn in praise of Goddess Lakshmi. Mother Lakshmi was pleased with his prayer and appeared in front of Adi Guru Shankaracharya. Adi Guru Shankaracharya requested Mother Lakshmi to bless that poor Brahmin woman and to make her rich. Mother Lakshmi made that poor Brahmin woman rich by showering her with gold coins.
