Mayurakshi River and Massanjore Dam – Mayurakshi River (also called Mor River) is the major river in Jharkhand and West Bengal and is around 250 km (160 mi) long. The river has its source in the Trikut Hills, about 16 kilometers (10 mi) from Deoghar town.

Mayurakshni river flows through Deoghar, Jharkhand, and then through the districts of Birbhum and Murshidabad in West Bengal before flowing into the Hooghly River.

Mayurakshi literally means “Peacock Eyes” (Mayur or Mor=Peacock, Akshi=eye).

Mayurakshi Reservoir Project | Massanjore Dam

Mayurakshi Reservoir Project was started in 1951 to build a dam across the Mayurakshi River. The dam has been completed and commissioned in 1956.

Mayurakshi River dam was mainly constructed for irrigation and hydropower generation for nearby districts of Jharkhand and West Bengal.

Mayurakshi Dam Project is located in Massanjore village near the Dumka district of Jharkhand state. This small village is about 31 km south of Dumka. The dam is so named as Massanjore dam.

The Massanjore dam was built with Canadian aid, so it is also called Canada Dam. It was formally inaugurated in 1955 by Lester B. Pearson, Foreign Minister of Canada. So the dam is also known as Pearson Dam.

Massanjore Dam Dumka is spread over 16650 acres, its height is 155 feet and length is 2170 feet, it has a total of 30 gates.

Massanjore Dam Park

Massanjore Dam is basically a hydroelectric power generating center but in the process of time, it has become a popular center for tourists.

The dam is bounded by hills and forests, a perfect place for outings. There are lush green hills and forests around the Masanjor Dam and there is a park near the dam which attracts tourists.
