Background | Timeline
AIIMS Deoghar is one of the apex healthcare institutes being established by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY).
PMSSY was initially announced by the Government of India in 2003 and officially launched in March 2006.
June 2016 – A proposal for setting up an AIIMS in Jharkhand was first made by the local government in June 2016. In August, in response to a request by the union government to come up with several alternatives for the location, the local government announced that the preferred location is in Deoghar, although Ranchi was also considered.
February 2017 – In the budget presentation on 1 Feb 2017 for 2017–2018, Minister of Finance Arun Jaitley officially announced the intent to establish an AIIMS in Jharkhand and one in Gujarat. These were later denoted as “Phase-VI” of PMSSY.
July- Dec 2017 – A detailed project report was prepared in July and the site in Deoghar was finalized in December 2017.
April- May 2018 – The local government handed over the 236.92 acres (95.88 ha) of land required for establishing the AIIMS, and finally, in May 2018, the union cabinet approved the AIIMS, with a provision of ₹1,103 crores (US$150 million).
25th May 2018 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of Deoghar AIIMS through a video link from an event in Sindri, Jharkhand.
October 2018 – The ₹9.02 billion (US$130 million) contract for building the institute was awarded to National Buildings Construction Corporation Limited (NBCC).
24 August 2021 – Inauguration of OPD services by Union Health Miniter Mansukh Mandaviya.
Why AIIMS Deoghar
The main aim and purpose of setting up new AIIMS in Deoghar is to correct regional imbalances in the availability of affordable and reliable healthcare services in this region. And also attaining self-sufficiency in graduate and postgraduate medical education and training.
We know that AIIMS is known for its quality medical education creating a critical mass of doctors and conducting research in the country relevant to the area.
These institutions are being established by an Act of Parliament on the lines of the original All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, which imparts both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in all its branches and related fields.
The main mission of AIIMS Deoghar is to establish a center of excellence in medical education, training, health care, and research imbued with scientific culture, compassion for the sick, and commitment to serve the underserved.

The main objectives of Deoghar AIIMS, according to the Executive Director & CEO, are to create an excellent academic and educational atmosphere for providing a platform for the development of quality medical services, teaching, and research.
Other objectives are to achieve the best quality in medical education delivery and training system and to render International standard quality patient care and health care development system.
Also aim to enhance the reputation of our country through relevant research in the medical field, creating clinical excellence and social awareness in young doctors and giving bright minds of the country a preference in participation of path-breaking research and giving new dimensions to medical science.

Students will get the best possible practical exposure through its multi-specialty and super-specialty hospitals supported by the finest and state-of-the-art laboratories. Medical education will be imparted by eminent faculty chosen from all over India and abroad.

Campus Of AIIMS Deoghar
The 750-bed AIIMS would be developed over 237 acres of land and it will be completed by next year.
Construction of the permanent campus for AIIMS Deoghar started in December 2019 and it is expected to be finished in February 2022. The OPD of AIIMS Deoghar was completed by May 2021; however, its inauguration has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Temporarily, the institute occupies the campus of the Panchayat Training Institute (PTI) in Deoghar, where hostels and classes are arranged.
Academics At AIIMS Deoghar
The institute became operational with the first batch of 50 MBBS students, which started in September 2019, one of the six AIIMSs to become operational in 2019. Saurabh Varshney was appointed director in March 2020. In 2020 total of 62 students were admitted for MBBS.

The institution will be expected to absorb talent, provide highly trained medical and paramedical manpower for the country and conduct research on national and regional health problems. Outside the purview of the Medical Council of India, the institute shall be allowed to experiment with innovations in medical education and serve as an advisory body for making government health policies.
OPD Services in Deoghar AIIMS
The Outpatient Department (OPD) services have been started on 24th August 2021.
Amidst the coronavirus pandemic and considering coronavirus infection as the new normal, AIIMS, Deoghar decided to open a registration window for availing OPD services only for two hours from 8.30 am every day except Sunday.
Registration charges are Rs. 30 with a validity of one year.
With the inauguration of the OPD services, initially around 200 patients would be able to avail the services of a dozen specialist doctors of different medical departments every day. A 15-bed daycare facility has been set up for the patients coming to the OPD for treatment at the 4-room complex set up at the institute. Around 20 kinds of pathological test facilities have been also available at the center.
